2023 NCAA DI Women’s Indoor Track & Field Rating Index – Week 1

NEW ORLEANS – Collegiate records are falling left and right.

That must mean the indoor track & field season is underway.

Here is the first release of the NCAA Division I Women’s Indoor Track & Field National TFRI, as released on Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). No marks from previous seasons have been used, which means this objective list is compiled solely of current qualifying marks from the 2023 indoor track & field season.

Texas begins the season as the top-ranked team in the National TFRI. The Longhorn sprinters have turned in seven of their eight national top-10 marks, including two national leading efforts. Julien Alfred opened up her season in style as she broke the collegiate record in the 60 meters, while Rhasidat Adeleke holds the top time in the 200 meters at 22.59c. Adeleke is one of three Longhorns that hold a top-5 performance in the 200, as Alfred is ranked No. 2 (22.78c) and Lanae Thomas is No. 5 (23.09c). Texas’ 4×400 relay, featuring both Adeleke and Alfred, are currently ranked second.

Washington finds itself ranked second for their highest ranking in program history. The Huskies have eight national top-10 marks, with four of them coming in the mile. Anna Gibson leads the pack in third at 4:35.46c, followed by Carley Thomas (No. 5, 4:35.24c), Sophie O’Sullivan (No. 6, 4:36.67c), and Madison Heisterman (No. 8, 4:38.15c). Gibson and O’Sullivan are also ranked in the top-7 in the 800 meters.

Kentucky sits in third after compiling five top-10 national marks across four events. Two of those marks sit at the top of the Descending Order List: Masai Russell, the new collegiate record holder in the 60-meter; the Wildcats’ Distance Medley Relay at 11:17.69c. Dajour Miles is also ranked No. 2 in the 400 at 52.56c.

Alabama is ranked fourth in the first National TFRI of the year, mainly behind the strength of its distance runners. Flomena Asekol is the national leader in the mile at 4:32.84c, while Hilda Olemomoi and Mercy Chelangat are ranked 2-3 in the 5000 meters at 15:17.97c and 15:18.12c, respectively. In the weight throw, Taylor Gorum is ranked fifth at 22.22mc (72-11).

Florida, the defending national champions, will start the season in fifth. The Gators turned in six top-10 national marks to begin the year at the Clemson Invite, led by Jasmine Moore’s national leader in the triple jump at 14.44m (47-4½). Imogen Barrett (800m), Talitha Diggs (60m) and Claire Bryant (high jump) also hold top-5 rankings in their respective events.

Here are the rest of the top-10 teams in Week 1: No. 6 Georgia, No. 7 Southern California, No. 8 Virginia Tech, No. 9 Tennessee and No. 10 Texas Tech.

Mark your calendars for March 10-11, as that’s when the 2023 NCAA DI Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
