It takes a team to win a championship. Sound familiar? That’s because no matter who’s on top, the sentiment remains the same. By that rationality, Pittsburg State holds the best odds to take home a title on March 9. The Gorillas have 16 opportunities to score points with 12 individuals competing and a pair of relay squads added to the mix. Pittsburg State has two national leaders – Daylin Williams in the 60-meter hurdles and Hunter Jones in the heptathlon – to go along with several other top-5 athletes.
Adams State opted for a different route, choosing quality over quantity. The Grizzlies have a whopping eight top-5 marks spread across every event from the 400 meters to the 5000 meters and even managed to tack on the DMR to that list. They arrive with the No. 1 times in the mile (Miguel Coca), 3000 meters (Miguel Coca), 5000 meters (Romaine Legendre), and DMR and the No. 2 times in the 400 meters and 800 meters.
It’s rare to have an equal distribution across unique event groups. Grand Valley State however, doesn’t care for norms. The Lakers have four jumpers, four throwers, four distance participants, and two relays for the cherry on top.
Minnesota State, who should be known as the jumps university of Division II at this point, has never won an indoor national title. They’re trying to change that this year on the back of three primary events: high jump, long jump, and triple jump. Seven out of their thirteen qualifying marks derive from that trio, with six of them ranked in the top-10.
West Texas A&M has been sneakily biding their time in the top-5 since Week 1. Though most of the flashy marks on paper are linked to weeks ago, a good peak could have the Buffs right back in contention at the top. And don’t forget, 2023 cross country individual champion William Amponsah, is set to vie for a couple of titles on his own in the 3000 meters and 5000 meters.
Here are the rest of the top-10 teams in Week 7: No. 6 Colorado School of Mines, No. 7 Harding, No. 8 Tiffin, No. 9 Central Missouri and No. 10 Missouri Southern.
