Adams State has been here before… multiple times. The five-time national champion Grizzlies will look to go back-to-back for the first time in program history despite nearly two decades of track and field dominance. Nine top-5 times and 15 top-10 marks will be the key to unlocking the final piece of the puzzle. Based on the data, the 3000 meters could make or break their chances of completing it, as eight individuals posted qualifying times in the event with Gracie Hyde leading the charge (8:58.33).
The biggest trial for the Grizzlies is predicted to come from Minnesota State. The Mavericks, who fought back and forth for the No. 1 spot weeks on end, match up quite well. Though the events are drastically divergent between the two powerhouses, their range is a spectacle. Eleven events feature 14 athletes and a relay unit. Oh, and how could one forget the three nationally leading marks from Denisha Cartwright (60-meter hurdles, 200 meters) and Flore Gracia (triple jump).
Pittsburg State sits third. Don’t be fooled however, as the Gorillas posted the same number of entries as their counterparts from above. Nineteen, to be exact. Though Pittsburg State doesn’t have a national leader on its roster, it does have ten top-5 marks and 13 top-10 marks.
Fourth-ranked Grand Valley State has a trio of events with three or more entries: the 3000 meters, the 5000 meters, and the shot put. Coming off of a 148.5 point victory – yes you read that correctly – at the GLIAC Indoor Championships, the Lakers are ready to roll. If their distance core can manage to break up the armada that is Adams State like they did at the 2023 NCAA DII Cross Country Championships, the gap to the top doesn’t look so far anymore.
Last, but certainly not least, is Azusa Pacific. The Cougars are relying on a select few names – six to be exact, with Esther Conde-Turpin holding a couple of top-5 marks (60m hurdles & pentathlon) – to carry them to a win.
Here are the rest of the top-10 teams in Week 7: No. 6 Angelo State, No. 7 West Texas A&M, No. 8 Colorado School of Mines, No. 9 Saginaw Valley State and No. 10 Northwest Missouri.
