Newsom, in his 27th year at Wartburg, was named the National Men’s Coach of the Year. He led the Knights to their first outdoor team title in program history at the 2021 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships with 54 points. Wartburg scored in nine events at the NCAA Championships, which included two top-8 athletes in the 5000 to give the squad some breathing room going into the 4×400 relay. Earlier in the season, the Knights romped to the team title at the American Rivers Conference Outdoor Championships, scoring 247 points for a 99-point margin of victory.
