Computer rankings were used for Division II in 2010, but for the first time, preseason data mixes with current-year data to produce a ranking score for each of the teams. The process is similar to what has been used by Division I since 2008. Preseason ranking data will continue to be part of the ranking process through week three (February 8).
No. 1 Saint Augustine’s (216.93) finished second in last year’s NCAA Indoor Championships to Adams State (89 points) with 72 points, 20 ahead of third-place Abilene Christian. Saint Augustine’s topped the nation with 82 points for the NCAA Outdoor Championship in 2010.
Defending national champion Adams State sits at No. 8 in preseason national computer ranking. The Grizzlies lost all but 14 of their 89 points from last year’s NCAA Indoor Championships to graduation.
On the women’s side, No. 1 Grand Valley State (292.66) has surged to a commanding lead in the preseason ranking. The Lakers tied for second with Ashland in last year’s NCAA Indoor Championship. Ashland is ranked third in this edition of the computer rankings.
No. 2 Lincoln (Mo.) won their fifth overall and third-consecutive national indoor team title in 2010. The Blue Tigers will be without Semoy Hackett. The then-sophomore Hackett won national titles in the 60 and 200 last March, but has since transferred to Division I LSU.
This year’s NCAA Indoor Championships will be held on March 11-12, again in Albuquerque, N.M. Week one computer rankings will be released on Tuesday, January 25.
