College Track & Field: What to Watch This Weekend & How to Watch It

NEW ORLEANS – Ready for indoor collegiate track & field championships season?

Ready or not, it’s here. And it’s going to be easier than ever to watch it live, even if you can’t be there to cheer on your favorite teams and athletes.

As of publication, 19 different conferences across all three NCAA Divisions will be running live streams for their fans to watch from anywhere. Plus, a handful of collegians – including collegiate leading women’s pole vaulter Demi Payne of Stephen F. Austin and men’s long jumper Jarvis Gotch of Louisiana Tech – will be competing at this weekend’s USATF Indoor Championships in Boston.

The NSIC meet continues on Friday, which is the day most conference meets this weekend kick off.

That includes the SEC Championships from Lexington, Kentucky, on the SEC Network+ (WatchESPN.com). Both national No. 1 teams – the Florida men and Arkansas women – will be in action in the country’s toughest conference, with a combined 16 top-25 teams, including the men of No. 3 Arkansas, No. 4 Texas A&M, No. 6 LSU, and No. 7 Georgia; and the women of No. 2 Georgia, No. 3 Florida, No. 7 Texas A&M and No. 9 Kentucky.

With all those top-flight teams come even more top-shelf athletes. Reigning winner of the men’s Bowerman Trophy Deon Lendore of Texas A&M; former pole vault collegiate record holder Sandi Morris of Arkansas; the Georgia field event trio of Kendell Williams, Keturah Orji and Leontia Kallenou; Florida sprinters Najee Glass and Dedric Dukes; Alabama sprinter Remona Burchell; Missouri’s Kearsten Peoples; jumpers Marquis Dendy of Florida and Jarrion Lawson of Arkansas; and Dominique Scott of Arkansas are among those in action – and they’re just the athletes who have been ranked No. 1 this season or have NCAA titles to their names!

The Big 12 also kicks off its championships from Ames, Iowa, on Friday, featuring the returning national runner-up women of No. 4 Texas against No. 6 Kansas State and No. 8 Baylor. The men’s competition features No. 5 Texas against No. 10 Texas Tech and No. 12 Oklahoma State.

Just a few of the meet’s featured athletes inclues a men’s 60-meters duel between Trayvon Bromell and John Teeters, returning The Bowerman women’s finalist Courtney Okolo of Texas, defending men’s shot put national champion Ryan Crouser of Texas, and breakout Kansas State star Akela Jones.

And don’t forget about the MPSF Championships from Seattle, Washington, where the defending national champion No. 2 men of Oregon and five-time defending national champion women of No. 5 Oregon will be in action. Watch returning men’s Bowerman Trophy finalist Edward Cheserek and Eric Jenkins lead a deep Oregon distance crew against distance rivals Colorado and Stanford, and Oregon women’s sprinters Jasmine Todd and Jenna Prandini against Ky Westbrook of Southern California.

Division III action will be highlighted by the start of the WIAC Championships, which will pit the two-time defending indoor national champion men of No. 1 UW-La Crosse against No. 4 former No. 1 (current No. 4 ) UW-Eau Claire, No. 5 UW-Whitewater and No. 7 UW-Oshkosh. Three national top-10 women’s teams will square off, including two-time defending national champion No. 3 UW-Oshkosh against No. 4 UW-La Crosse and No. 8 UW-Whitewater.
