Central Arizona, Iowa Central Teams to Beat in NJCAA Division I

NEW ORLEANS – Depending on which poll you look at, Central Arizona College or Iowa Central Community College is the team to beat in National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Cross Country.

In the newest National Coaches’ Polls released Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), Central Arizona and Iowa Central are either ranked No. 1 or No. 2. The Iowa Central men’s team is just barely picked ahead of Central Arizona in their poll, while the Central Arizona women have a slight edge over Iowa Central in their version on the rankings.

There was quite a bit of movement in the men’s poll as Paradise Valley Community College shook things up. Paradise Valley went from unranked to No. 4 and earned three first-place votes from the panel. Dave Barney’s team is one of six programs from the West Region in the top-10 (South Plains is ranked ahead at No. 3).

Three teams in the men’s poll fell out of the top-10 – Iowa Western Community College (fourth to 11th), Mesa Community College (9th to 17th) and North Iowa Area Community College (10th to 16th).

In the women’s poll, it’s status quo behind No. 1 Central Arizona and No. 2 Iowa Central. Lansing Community College, Mesa Community College and El Paso Community College are third through fifth, respectively.

Butler (Kan.) Community College made quite the jump in the past two weeks, going from 16th to sixth. North Iowa Area tumbled from sixth to 12th.

In addition to Paradise Valley, there are four other new additions to the polls – Mott Community College (Men’s 22nd), New Mexico Junior College (Women’s 17th), Pratt Community College (Women’s 21st), Vincennes (Women’s 23rd) and Ranger College (25th Women’s).

The NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will be held Saturday, November 14 at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
