NCAA DI Cross Country Team Academic Awards – 2016

By Tyler Mayforth, USTFCCCA

February 9, 2017

NEW ORLEANS — National championships in cross country might be won on the grass, but teams must pour countless hours into practice and in the classroom to make sure those championship dreams are realized.

Northern Arizona and Oregon used the perfect mix this past season as they not only captured their 1st and 4th NCAA XC titles in program history, respectively, but did so while holding it down in the classroom as well.

QUICK LINKS: Men’s Scholar Teams | Women’s Scholar Teams

That’s why the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) is pleased announce that NAU and Oregon were named the NCAA Division I Scholar Teams of the Year for the 2016 cross country season.

In order to win this honor, the Ducks and Lumberjacks not only had to be the top finishing team for their respective gender at NCAAs, but needed a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).

Overall, there were 431 teams that earned distinction from the USTFCCCA for their efforts both athletically and academically. Of those 431 teams, 242 were women’s and 189 were men’s.

No team held down a perfect 4.0 GPA during the XC season, but the highest billed teams were the Georgia State University women (3.85) and the men of Bowling Green State University (3.71).

This is the 2nd time in the past four years that Northern Arizona was named the NCAA Division I Men’s Scholar Team of the Year. The Lumberjacks also captured the honor back in 2013 when they finished a close runner-up to Colorado at NCAAs (149-169).

NAU wouldn’t be denied this year, however, as it topped Stanford 125-158 behind the lead of senior Futsum Zienasellassie (4th overall, 29:49.8).

The Lumberjacks had a team GPA of 3.12 during the XC season.

Wins don’t get any more dramatic than how Oregon won its 4th XC title in program history.

The Ducks were locked in a dead heat with Michigan and if Maggie Schmaedick didn’t beat Jaimie Phelan to the finish line, the crown would have gone back to Ann Arbor, Michigan, not Eugene, Oregon.

Well, Schmaedick crossed the finish line before Phelan and here we are.

Oregon won by 1 point (125-126) and held a team GPA of 3.42 during the XC season, so it was an easy choice for them to be the NCAA Division I Women’s Scholar Team of the Year.
