All-America Honorees Announced for 2015 NCAA DIII Outdoor Season

NEW ORLEANS — After this weekend’s NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the top eight athletes and relays in each event were officially honored on Tuesday as All-Americans. 

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the honors on Tuesday.  Programs must be USTFCCCA members for their athletes to earn the awards.

The men and women of UW-La Crosse were the first teams from the same school to sweep NCAA team titles since Lincoln (Pa.) did so in 2000.  It follows, then, that the Eagles also had the most All-Americans in DIII. 

La Crosse’s eighteen men’s All-Americans led all men’s teams, and the Eagles’ nineteen All-American women were the most from any women’s team.

UW-Eau Claire finished second in both team battles, but only second in the All-American count on the women’s side.  Eleven Blugold women were named All-American—the same number produced by the women of Illinois Wesleyan and Wartburg. 

Salisbury’s men had the second most All-American honors with thirteen.  It helped the Seagulls’ count that they were led by four-time All-American Luke Campbell, who won both the 110 and 400 meter hurdles and ran relay legs for Salisbury’s top-eight 4×1 and 4×4.  He led all men with four honors—and is only a junior.

Sprinters Ross Denman (La Crosse), Bruce Gray (Greenville), and David Devore (Augustana) were the only other triple men’s All-Americans.  Denman ran a leg on La Crosse’s winning 4×100 relay, while Gray won the 100 meters.

Six women left Canton with three medals, but they were all topped by Baldwin Wallace senior Melanie Winters, who won four.  Winter finished fourth in the high jump, third in the long jump, fifth in the 200, and sixth in the 100 hurdles.

The six women who were three-time All-Americans this weekend were led by UW-Eau Claire’s Carly Fehler, who won the 100 and 200 meters and anchored the winning 4×100 meter relay.

As usual, the Wisconsin schools outpaced the other conferences in All-Americans by a huge margin.  The WIAC had fifty men’s All-Americans, well clear of the CAC’s nineteen, the CCIW’s fifteen, and the SCIAC’s thirteen.  Just shy of one in four of the two hundred and sixteen men’s All-Americans came from the WIAC.

That statistic is slightly less pronounced on the women’s side, where the WIAC produced forty-two All-Americans.  Leading the rest of Division III were the CCIW (twenty-one), IIAC (fourteen), and the SAA and SUNYAC (eleven each).
