UW-La Crosse finds itself in a familiar position – entering the NCAA meet with the No. 1 ranking. The Eagles, who have 16 entries, are seeking their second national title in program history. Of those 16 entries, ten are ranked among the top-10 seasonal performers, including two that own the top spot on the chart: Skye Digman in the shot put and Hannah Zenkovich in the pentathlon. Digman and Zenkovich are also ranked among the top-6 seasonal performers in a secondary event and will help give UW-La Crosse added depth in the field events this weekend.
Second-ranked Loras and third-ranked Johns Hopkins are considered to be UW-La Crosse’s toughest competition, according to the National TFRI. The Duhawks and the Blue Jays are separated by less than five ranking points, which is considered infinitesimal by the computer.
Loras has 10 entries to the meet with three that top the national chart: Kassie Parker in both the 3000m and 5000m; Alyssa Pfadenhauer in the 400. Grace Alley is top-5 in both the pentathlon and triple jump, while Marion Edwards brings the fifth-best seasonal 200 into the meet.
Johns Hopkins has a gender-high 17 entries to the meet, which includes 10 in distance events alone. Want to know an even crazier number? The Blue Jays will flock to the 3000m, as they own six entries in that event with athletes ranging from No.2 to No. 17 on the seasonal list. Ella Baran is an athlete to watch this weekend as a double NCAA DIII record-holder in the mile and 3000m is ready to shine on the big stage and will go up against Parker in the latter event.
Ithaca is up one spot from No. 5 to No. 4. The Bombers, who have only made one podium in program history, have 11 entries into the meet. Tia Jones is a double national leader in the 60 and 200, while Megan Matheny is tops in the nation in the pole vault. Make sure to keep an eye on Logan Bruce in the pentathlon, as she is ranked fourth nationally in that multi.
Mount Union used a late-season surge to jump two spots from No. 7 to No. 5. The Purple Raiders hauled in eight entries to the meet, with one each in eight different events. Four of those entries are ranked among the top-5 seasonal performers with Kennady Gibbins leading the way in the pentathlon at No. 2. Gibbens is also ranked third nationally in the high jump.
Here are the rest of the top-10 teams in Week 7: No. 6 Washington (Mo.) (down two spots), No. 7 Wartburg (up two spots), No. 8 SUNY Geneseo (up two spots), No. 9 Dubuque (up four spots), No. 10 UChicago (down four spots). There is a stark difference in how many entries these five teams, ranging from 14 and 13 for the Bears and Maroons, respectively, and just six for the Spartans. It’s how you get the most out of those entries that matters.
