Conference Championships Weekend was a blur.
No. 1 Wingate had no problem at the SAC Championships. In the midst of hot, humid conditions, the Bulldogs captured a fourth straight SAC title with just 19 points to their name. Will Aitken and Joaquin Campos were the only members of their top-10 to start the race and the duo slammed the door shut, going 23:46.0 and 23:52.1 over 8k for a 1-2 finish. Completing a picture perfect podium was Lars Laros, coming through the line third in 24:06.7.
No. 2 Colo. School of Mines was tasked with topping one of the hardest conferences in the country, the RMAC. The Orediggers delivered, placing all five scoring athletes within the top-10 at the Gene Torres Golf Course. Loic Scomparin (23:45.21), Paul Knight (23:52.66), and Logan Bocovich (24:00.33) slotted in second, third, and fourth, while Matt Mettler (24:14.29) and Max Bonenberger (24:21.25) registered sixth and ninth, respectively, for a grand total of 24 points.
No. 5 Adams State tested Colorado School of Mines. Romain Legendre did his thing at the front, claiming the individual title in 23:33.8 as Juan Rosales and Kidus Begashaw recorded seventh and eighth place finishes. The Grizzlies compiled 45 points on their way to a runner-up performance, but the bigger news is that they handed No. 6 Western Colorado a 55-point loss.
No. 3 West Texas A&M executed their game plan at the Lone Star Conference Championships, winning a 12th consecutive title with a perfect 1-5 sweep. The Buffs 81 point deficit was piloted by individual champion William Amponsah, and a casual 23:51 average for the team. No. 4 Grand Valley State followed suit at the GLIAC Championships. The Lakers posted a perfect 1-5 sweep of their own, collecting a 22nd consecutive title with Caleb Futter at the helm.
Other winners from the weekend included No. 12 Northwest Missouri, No. 18 Azusa Pacific, and No. 20 Augustana (S.D.). The Bearcats left the MIAA with a crown, putting three guys before the entire No. 22 Pittsburg State roster to jump four spots. The Cougars surprised everyone at the PacWest Championships, upsetting the favorites, No. 19 Biola (Calif.), to move up nine spots. The Vikings took home the NSIC trophy in style with four guys inside the top-10 to earn a four-spot bump.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 23, because that’s when the 2024 NCAA DII Cross Country Championships will be held at the Arcade Creek Cross Country Course in Sacramento, California.
