NEW ORLEANS – It’s meet week!
The 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships are set to take place on the campus of Grand Valley State in Allendale, Michigan. Competition will begin on Thursday and conclude Saturday.
Here is what the men’s team title race could shape up to be in the Pre-Championships edition of the the National TFRI that was released on Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Grand Valley State is seeking its first men’s national title and enters the meet ranked No. 1. The Lakers will enter the meet with 17 entries with nine sitting in the top-5. Athletes entering the meet as the top seed are Dennis Mbuta in the 800 (1:49.07) and Isaac Harding in the 5000 (13:47.08).
West Texas A&M heads into the NCAA meet at No. 2. Nine of the 10 entries for the Buffs of them sit among the top-5. Don’t blink, because you won’t want to miss Benjamin Azamati. The national leader and NCAA DII record holder in the 100 (9.97) and 200 (20.20c/20.13A) is also part of the second-ranked 4×100 (40.04).
Third-ranked Angelo State is looking to get back on the podium and potentially win the program’s first NCAA crown. The Rams boast 12 entries across 10 events. Decio Andrade is the lone top-seed for the Rams with his 73.57m (241-5) in the hammer throw.
Don’t count out fourth-ranked Ashland, as the Eagles are on title defense after claiming the crown for the first time in program history in 2019. As he has all season long, Trevor Bassitt will lead this Ashland squad as the top seed in the 110H (13.59), 400H (49.04) and carries the baton for the national-leading 4×400 (3:08.78) and third-ranked 4×100 (40.08).
Pittsburg State gained one spot to regain a position in the top-5. The Gorillas will head to Allendale, Michigan with 18 entries across 11 events. Brett Thompson is the top-seed in the javelin with his haul of 76.65m (251-6) and joined with three teammates in the event.
