It’s not hard to understand why Minnesota State was crowned No. 1 when you look at the numbers. The Mavericks control 14 national top-10 marks across 10 events. And if that’s not enough, they have arguably the best female sprinter in Division II at the moment in Denisha Cartwright. The senior is No. 1 in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.19 and No. 2 in the 60 meters at 7.32. Just to add to the mix, seven unique names are sprawled across the field events with top-10 marks. They include Flore Gracia (No. 1, triple jump), Makayla Jackson (No. 2, long jump), Stella Neophytou (No. 4, triple jump), Lillian Washington (No. 5, triple jump), Mony Johnson (No. 7 weight throw), Paige Hickson (No. 8, pole vault), and Victoria Ermolaeva (No. 8 pentathlon).
No. 2 Adams State is a force to be reckoned with, but for other reasons than their opposition above. The Grizzlies made their presence known in a select few events, most notably the 800 meters, the mile, 3000 meters, and 5000 meters. Not too shocking when considering the program’s distance history. Between the latter two events there are eight women in the top-10. Gracie Hyde (4:37.41, mile), Ava O’Connor (9:10.48, 3000 meters), and Brianna Robles (15:55.16, 5000 meters) are ranked first nationally while Jessica Simon isn’t too far off pace (No. 2, 800 meters).
In spite of not owning a single Division II leading mark, the ladies at Pittsburg State retain control of 13 top-10 marks across eight events. Perhaps even more impressive is the pairs of teammates that have worked together to make this possibility a reality. Taniyah Looney and Diandrenique Gaines are No. 6 and No. 9 in the 60 meters, respectively. Blakelee Winn and Madelyn Marquez are No. 5 and No. 8 in the 60-meter hurdles, respectively. Erica Schamel and Haleigh Hadley are No. 2 and No. 5 in the high jump, respectively. Auna Childress and Taylor Nelloms are No. 5 and No. 7 in the triple jump, respectively. Blakelee Winn and Mattie Flanagan are No. 2 and No. 3 in the pentathlon, respectively.
Grand Valley State secured the No. 4 position in a similar fashion to their cross country rivals with a host of distance times. In fact, it’s nine top-10 times spread out between four events. The biggest difference between the two fell on the throwing events. At the moment, the Lakers are winning that battle due to Erica Beistle, Mackenzie Bohrer, and Paige Westra who are sitting at No. 1, No. 6 and No. 9 in the shot put.
Making their name known in the No. 5 spot is the Academy of Art, who posted their highest ranking since 2013. That thanks should be directed towards Marie Jeanne-Ourega who has three top-5 marks on her own. The junior out of L’Haÿ-les-Roses, France is No. 1 in the long jump at 6.16m (20-2½), No. 3 in the triple jump at 12.64m (41-5¾), and No. 4 in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.49. Notably, the Urban Knights also possess the No. 1 DMR time in Division II at 11:50.82.
Here are the rest of the top-10 teams in Week 1: No. 6 West Texas A&M, No. 7 Northwest Missouri, No. 8 Angelo State, No. 9 Findlay and No. UC-Colorado Springs.
