NCAA DIII wTF All-Academic AthletesDIII Women’s Track & Field Scholar Athletes of the Year & All-Academic Individuals Announced
NEW ORLEANS – Lucy Cheadle of Washington (Mo.), Alison Maxwell of Middlebury and Bria Halama of UW-La Crosse have been named the female Scholar Athletes of the Year in Division III for the 2014-15 track & field season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the association announced Friday.

Based on their accomplishments both in the classroom and in competition during the recently completed academic year, these three women were exceptional among a group of 420 who earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors. The full breakdown of All-Academic selections can be found below.
Scholar Athletes of the Year were selected as the highest-finishing performers at the NCAA Indoor & Outdoor Championships who also achieved USTFCCCA All-Academic Individual status. Those who earned multiple individual championship titles ranked higher in the tie-breaking process, and cumulative GPA is weighed as the final tiebreaker to establish a winner.
Separate awards are given to track athletes and field athletes for the indoor and outdoor seasons, resulting in four categories.
Cheadle and Maxwell were named co-winners for the indoor track award, Cheadle claimed the outdoor track honor outright, and Halama swept both the indoor and outdoor field awards.
Cheadle, a senior chemical engineering major with a cumulative 3.80 grade point average, claimed a pair of national titles in 2015 en route to her first Scholar Athlete awards. Indoors, she was declared the national champion at 5000 meters in a controversial finish marred by miscounted laps and finished sixth at 3000 meters. Outdoors, she won the NCAA steeplechase title in 10:25.32 to defend her national title.
She is the second woman from Washington (Mo.) to earn Scholar Athlete of the Year honors in track & field.
Maxwell, a senior chemistry major with a cumulative 3.80 grade point average, claimed the indoor national title in the mile en route to her first career Scholar Athlete award. She emerged victorious in the indoor mile national championship by the slimmest of margins, running 4:56.17 to win by approximately a third of a second. She also ran a leg of the fourth-place distance medley relay.
Her award is the first Scholar Athlete honor for the Middlebury women’s program.
Halama, a junior therapeutic recreation/pre-occupational therapy major with a cumulative 3.85 GPA, became the first woman to sweep the indoor and outdoor field Scholar Athlete awards since Michelle Favre of Ramapo in 2013. Her 2015 awards bring her career total of Scholar Athlete awards to three after winning in 2014.
Outdoors, she won the triple jump with a career-best leap of 42-2¾ (12.87m) to go along with a third-place finish at 400 meters. Indoors, she won the triple jump with an indoor career-best mark of 40-9½ (12.43m) and ran a leg of the winning 4×400 relay.
With her two awards this season, The UW-La Crosse women have now won a total of five awards.
All-Academic Individuals
UW-La Crosse Earns the Most All-Academic Awards; WIAC Tops the List of Conferences
Including the Scholar Athletes of the Year, a total of 420 women from 127 institutions earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for their combined academic and athletic accomplishments.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met either of the following athletic standards:
- Competed in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship
- Finished the regular season ranked in the national top 35 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 25 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org
UW-La Crosse earned 15 All-Academic awards to lead all women’s teams, followed by UW-Stout with 12, UW-Eau Claire and Washington (Mo.) with 11, and the trio of Illinois Wesleyan, Williams and Mount Union with 10 each.
The WIAC topped the list of conferences with 55 total awards earned by its member institutions, followed by the NESCAC with 41.
Fifteen different women recorded a cumulative GPA of 4.0.
