There were no changes to the order of the top-5 teams: West Texas A&M is the top-ranked team for a third consecutive week, followed by No. 2 Grand Valley State, No. 3 Texas A&M Commerce, No. 4 Pittsburg State and No. 5 Adams State.
West Texas A&M continued to dominate the sprints and hurdles this season, posting four season best efforts that sit among the top-10 nationally. Three of those efforts came in the 100 meters alone from Jalen Purcell (No. 3), Desmond Aryee (No. 4) and Jeremiah Lauzon (No. 7), while Benjamin Azamati continues to hold the fastest time among all collegians this year. Jahmaal Wilson also improved upon his No. 2 standing in the 110H.
Grand Valley State had several strong performances at their own Al Owens Classic with five improved national top-10 marks. Myles Kerner took over the national lead in the shot put (19.48m/63-11), while Brandon Miller (100 meters) and Hunter Harding (hammer throw) turned in season bests that sit among the top-5 of the Descending Order List.
Texas A&M-Commerce had one improved season best from the ASU Twilight. Moaz Ibrahim threw 57.08m (187-3) in the discus for an improvement on his No. 2 standing in the event this season.
Although Pittsburg State and Adams State did not turn in any new or improved national top-10 performances, both teams have separated themselves from the rest of the pack to maintain their rankings. The Gorillas have nine national top-10 marks on their ledger, including a trio of national leaders in the 110H, 400 and triple jump. The Grizzlies tallied 11 national top-10 marks themselves, with two national-leading efforts in the steeplechase and 10,000.
Here are the rest of the top-10 teams in Week 5: No. 6 Central Missouri, No. 7 Colorado School of Mines (up three spots), No. 8 CSU Pueblo (down one spot), No. 9 UC-Colorado Springs (down one spot) and No. 10 Angelo State (up three spots).
Mark your calendars for May 26-28, because that’s when the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Michigan!
