Azusa Pacific is the top-ranked team for a second-straight week, but not by much as now-No. 2 Grand Valley State is down by less than a point in the computer calculations. The second-ranked Lakers added two national leaders to its ledger to get the bump in the National TFRI this week: Ellianne Kimes cleared 4.29m (14-0¾) at the Len Paddock Open to match the seventh-best performer in NCAA DII history; Judith Essemiah had a massive toss of 62.99m (206-8) in the hammer throw. Grand Valley State claimed the program’s 22nd consecutive GLIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship this past weekend.
West Texas A&M fell one spot to No. 3 by no fault of its own. The Lady Buffs picked up four new or improved national top-10 marks as they romped to their second-straight Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Two of those marks came in the triple jump from Taylor Nelloms (No. 2, 13.13m/43-1) and Miriam Zanovello (No. 10, 12.48m/40-11½). Other Lady Buffs that turned in season bests at the LSC Championships were Zada Swoopes in the discus (No. 2, 54.16m/177-8) and DeOndra Green in the 100 (No. 6, 11.44).
Minnesota State leapfrogged Fresno Pacific for the No. 4 spot and bumped the Sunbirds down to No. 5 this week. The Mavericks earned the boost after adding seven new or improved national top-10 marks to its resume at the Deb Schulz Open. Denisha Cartwright has a hand in three of those efforts, as she clocked the nation’s fastest time in the 100H (13.38), moved to No. 5 in the 100 (11.41), and is No. 7 in the 200 (23.64). Other top performers for Minnesota State were Kary Petricka in the long jump (No. 4, 6.29m/20-7¾), Brea Perron in the shot put (No. 6, 14.95m/49-¾), Flore Gracia in the triple jump (No. 8, 12.57m/41-3) and Taylor Elliott in the high jump (No. 10, 1.73m-5-8).
Here are the rest of the top-10 teams in Week 7: No. 6 Adams State (unchanged), No. 7 Pittsburg State (up two spots), No. 8 Texas A&M-Commerce (down one spot), No. 9 Lincoln (Mo.) (up four spots) and No. 10 Angelo State (up two spots). The Gorillas claimed the MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship and gained five new or improved national top-10 marks, led by Christine Williams’ 23.33 in the 200 for the second-fastest time of the season. The Blue Tigers turned in five new or improved national top-10 marks at the MIAA Championships, headlined by Maria Diamond clocking the No. 2 time in the 400H of 58.00. The Belles added five new or improved national top-10 performances at the LSC Championships, with three of them coming from Antonija Radic in the triple jump (No. 3, 12.85m/42-2), long jump (No. 6, 6.22m/20-5) and high jump (No. 9, 1.74m/5-8½).
