2022 NJCAA Division III Cross Country Regional Awards

NEW ORLEANS — Here are the Regional Athletes & Coaches of the Year for the 2022 NJCAA DIII Cross Country season, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA)!

These awards were voted on by member coaches prior to the 2022 NJCAA DIII Cross Country Championships in Westfield, Massachusetts.

Men’s Athlete of the Year

CENTRAL REGION — Nicholas Keeling — DuPage (Ill.)

Keeling, who hails from Naperville, Illinois, won the individual title at the Region IV Championships in 26:11.5. He also won the previous week at the Beloit Cross Country Invitational and placed top-5 at two other meets this season. 

EAST REGION — Teddy Purdon — Brookdale (N.J.) CC

Purdon, who hails from Little Silver, New Jersey, won the individual title at the Region XIX Championships in 28:00. He led the Jersey Blues to the team title at the meet, too.

NORTHEAST REGION — Thomas Hayden — SUNY Orange

Hayden, who hails from Middletown, New York, won the individual title at the Region XV Championships in 28:34. He also ran 16:06.9 over the 5k distance this season.

Men’s Coach of the Year

CENTRAL REGION — Robert Cervenka — DuPage (Ill.)

Cervenka coached College of DuPage (Ill.) to the team title in the Region IV Championships. The Chaps scored 45 points to win the title by 27 points.

EAST REGION — Shawn Fountain — Catawba Valley (N.C.) CC

Fountain coached Catawba Valley (N.C.) CC to the team title at the Region X Championships.The Red Hawks scored 26 points to win the title by three points.

NORTHEAST REGION — Tom Carter — SUNY Broome CC

Carter coached SUNY Broome CC to the team title in the Region III Championships. The Hornets scored 38 points to win the title by 28 points.

Women’s Athlete of the Year

CENTRAL REGION — Payden Pietrusinski — St. Charles (Mo.) CC

Pietrusinski, who hails from Wentzville, Missouri, won the individual title at the Region XVI Championships in 20:19. She went undefeated against NJCAA DIII competition all season.

EAST REGION — Alheli Ramos-Garcia — Patrick & Henry (Va.) CC

Ramos-Garcia, who hails from Bassett, Virginia, won the individual title at the Region X Championships in 21:14.5. She beat the runner-up by 25.4 seconds.

NORTHEAST REGION — Lydia Smith — SUNY Erie

Smith, who hails from Williamsport, Pennsylvania, won the individual title at the Region III Championships in 20:52. She posted multiple victories this year, including triumphs at the Meghan Memorial Race as well as the Bruce Bridgeman Invitational.

Women’s Coach of the Year

CENTRAL REGION — Erin O’Kelley — Oxford (Ga.)

O’Kelley coached Oxford (Ga.) to the team title at the Region XVII Championships. The Eagles registered a perfect score of 15 points to win the title by 55 points.

EAST REGION — Richard Briggs — Central Carolina (N.C.) CC

Briggs coached Central Carolina (N.C.) CC to the team at the Region X Championships.The Cougars registered a perfect score of 15 points.

NORTHEAST REGION — Karim McFarlane — SUNY Westchester CC

McFarlane coached SUNY Westchester CC to the team title at the Region XV Championships. The Vikings scored 18 points to win the title by 19 points.
