Indian Hills (Iowa) CC started the season with quite the debut, as the Warriors topped the ratings for the first time in program history. Indian Hills’ previous best rating was No. 2 in Week 1 of 2021. The Warriors have a hefty lead of more than 200 points thanks to 30 top-10 marks in leading six events with Tyrice Taylor and Triston Miller each having a pair – Taylor in the 600 yards (1:09.34) and 800 meters (1:48.49), while Miller leads the 60 hurdles (7.86) and heptathlon (4825 points). Also topping lists are Traunard Folson in the 60 (6.63) and Keveroy Venson in the 1000 (2:25.30).
Another Region XI program starts off high – Iowa Western CC is No. 2 in equaling its program best set seven times previously (six of those coming in 2022). The Reivers – third in the last two NJCAA Indoor Championships – have 14 top-10 marks led by national leader – and current M-F National Athlete of the Week – Geoffrey Ronoh in the 5000 (13:49.47).
Defending co-champion New Mexico JC is No. 3. The T-Birds have 15 top-10 marks including three national leaders: Donald Chiyangwa with two – the 400 (46.21) and as anchor on the 4×400 relay (3:09.25) – and Tapiwanashe Makarawu in the 200 (20.36 converted from his NJCAA record 20.29).
No. 4 Barton (Kan.) CC opens in the top-5 for a ninth-straight year – the last eight ended with a top-5 finish at the NJCAA Indoor Championships. The Cougars have 12 top-10 marks with three national leaders – Christopher Young in the shot put (18.40m/60-4½) and weight throw (17.40m/57-1) and Trevon Hamer in the triple jump (15.70m/51-6¼).
South Plains (Texas) – co-champs with New Mexico JC last year after winning the previous two years – is in familiar territory with a 10th-straight year rating in the top-5. The Texans have 13 top-10 marks with No. 2 ratings in the pole vault (Django Segovia at 4.69m/15-4½) and triple jump (Mouhameth Fall at 15.44m/50-8).
Finishing out the top-10 teams in the national TFRI are No. 6 Pima (Ariz.) CC, No. 7 Salt Lake (Utah) CC, No. 8 Coffeyville (Kan.) CC, No. 9 Mesa (Ariz.) CC and No. 10 Butler (Kan.) CC. Those are first-ever top-10 ratings for Pima and Salt Lake.
Keep March 1-2 circled on your calendars, as that’s when the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships are scheduled at the Alachua County Events Center in Gainesville, Florida.
