NEW ORLEANS – The men’s track & field teams at Indiana University and Arizona State University were named Monday as Scholar Teams of the Year in Division I for the 2010 seasons by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The squads earned the distinction as a result of being the highest-placing teams with at least a 3.00-cumulative GPA at the most recent NCAA indoor and outdoor championship, respectively. In addition, the USTFCCCA announced 73 teams as All-Academic teams for the track & field seasons.

Indiana placed sixth at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships and ended the 2010 winter term with a 3.02 cumulative team GPA. At the March meeting, sophomore Derek Drouin would win the front end of the indoor-outdoor high jump double for 10 points to the Hoosier cause. The DMR team of De’Sean Turner, Kind Butler, Daniel Stockberger, and Bayer took seventh.

Arizona State notched a 3.15 team cumulative GPA and claimed fourth place at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with 37 points. Senior Ryan Whiting, who last week was named the Scholar Athlete of the Year, led the Sun Devils with national crowns in the shot put (72-1, 21.97m) and discus (193-9, 59.06m). Freshman Jordan Clarke and senior Jason Lewis added fifth-and-seventh place showings, respectively, with the shot, and Lewis also took seventh with the discus.
