Tennessee, Penn State Women Lauded as Scholar Teams of the Year

NEW ORLEANS – The women’s track & field teams at the University of Tennessee and Penn State University were named Wednesday as Scholar Teams of the Year in Division I for the 2010 seasons by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The squads earned the distinction as a result of being the highest-placing teams with at least a 3.00-cumulative GPA at the most recent NCAA indoor and outdoor championship, respectively. In addition, the USTFCCCA announced 151 teams as All-Academic teams for the track & field seasons.

Past All-Academic Teams

Indoor Track & Field Scholar Team of the Year – Tennessee

Tennessee claimed 36 team points to finish second as a team at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Senior Phoebe Wright claimed the national crown in the 800 meters with a 2:02.55 run in the final. Wright also led off the Lady Vol DMR to another national title along with Ellen Wortham, Chanelle Price, and Brittany Sheffey. Price also finished fourth in the 800. In addition, Jackie Areson added a third- and fourth-place showing at the national meet in the 5000 and 3000 meters, respectively.

Tennessee claimed a cumulative team GPA of 3.14 through the winter 2010 semester.

Outdoor Track & Field Scholar Team of the Year – Penn State

Penn State claimed fourth place at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in scoring 34 team points. Senior Bridget Franek went untested in a 9:38.86 run for the national crown in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Aleesha Barber placed third in the 100 hurdles while Fawn Dorr posted a fourth-place finish in the 400 hurdles. Junior Karlee McQuillen notched a third-place performance in the javelin, and Shavon Greaves took seventh in the 200. The 4×400-meter relay squad of Barbar, Greaves, Anyanwu, and Dorr took fourth in the meet’s finale to spring over Virginia Tech’s 33 for a “trophy finish”. The Nittany Lions had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00.

All-Academic Status Earned by 151 Teams

In addition to the Scholar Teams of the Year, the USTFCCCA also announced the women’s 2010 Division I All-Academic Track & Field Teams. A total of 151 institutions earned the distinction as a result of a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or better.

Oklahoma led the nation with the highest team cumulative GPA (3.62) through the winter 2010 term. Quinnipiac was next in line at 3.58.

The Big East led all conferences as 12 of their members notched All-Academic status, including DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Rutgers, St. John’s, Syracuse, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, USF, Villanova, and West Virginia. The MAC, Big Ten, Atlantic 10, and Big 12 followed with eight.
