LSU shows no signs of slowing down as it headlines the National TFRI for yet another week. The Tigers starred at the SEC Outdoor Championships this past weekend, as Terrance Laird and JuVaughn Harrison stole the spotlight, as usual. Laird completed the 100-200-4×100 triple with blistering marks – especially in the 100 and 200, where he took over the national lead in the former at 9.80w (+3.2) and dropped another scorcher in the latter of 19.82 (+1.7). Harrison won an epic high jump duel against Darryl Sullivan of Tennessee, as he cleared 2.36m (7-8¾) to match the second-best performer in collegiate history and went a perfect 7-for-7 during the competition. Sean Burrell also improved his seasonal best in the 400H to 48.92.
Oregon returns to No. 2 thanks to a number of strong efforts at the Pac-12 Outdoor Championships in Los Angeles, California. The Ducks soared in the 800 as Luis Peralta, Charlie Hunter and Cole Hocker notched seasonal bests that put them No. 5 (1:46.13), No. 6 (1:46.34) and No. 7 (1:46.39) on the Descending Order List, respectively. Other notable marks were turned in by Emmanuel Ihemeje in the triple jump (No. 5, 16.60m/54-5½) and Jackson Mestler in the steeplechase (No. 9, 8:35.32).
Southern California jumped one spot from No. 4 to No. 3 after its performances on its home track. The Trojans added or improved four national top-10 marks: Isaiah Jewett continues to lead the 800 at 1:45.16; Nathan Bultman is now ranked third in the hammer at 73.12m (239-11); Cameron Samuel now sits third in the 400H at 49.09; Davonte Burnett cracked the top-10 of the 100 with his eighth-ranked 10.05 clocking.
Texas is back … in the top-5 at No. 4. The Longhorns chipped in three new or improved national top-10 efforts this past weekend at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships, including the No. 2 effort in the long jump from Steffin McCarter at 8.35m (27-4¾), the No. 6 mark in the 400H from Charles Brockman III at 49.51 and the No. 8 total in the decathlon from Leo Neugebauer at 7793 points. While it’s not a top-10 mark, Tripp Piperi made his season debut in the shot put and is now ranked 17th nationally at 19.80m (64-11½).
BYU fell three spots from No. 2 to No. 5 to no fault of its own. Even though it’s not reflected in the rankings, Conner Mantz hit a national-leading mark in the 10,000 meters at 27:41.16.
Here are the rest of the top-10 teams in Week 8: No. 6 Florida State, No. 7 Georgia, No. 8 Florida, No. 9 Iowa State and No. 10 Alabama. The Bulldogs were the Biggest Mover of the Week in the top-10 as they jumped nine spots from Week 7 thanks to their efforts at the SEC Outdoor Championships in College Station, Texas.
The 2021 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held from June 9-12 at the reimagined Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
