LSU remained No. 1 for the second week in a row and the third time this season. The Tigers were aided by Terrance Laird, who turned in the third-fastest mark over 100 meters on the Descending Order List at 10.06 this past weekend at the Boots Garland Invitational. Not to be outdone, Sean Burrell went 50.15 for what is now the seventh-fastest mark this season.
Southern California jumped two spots from No. 4 to No. 2 after a strong weekend. The Trojans added or improved two national top-15 marks to their ledger at the Long Beach Invitational – none bigger than McKay Johnson’s 19.95m (65-5½) heave in the shot put that ranks him fourth on the seasonal chart. Johnson owns one of seven national top-10 marks by USC.
Florida held steady at No. 3, right ahead of now No. 4 BYU. The Gators saw Thomas Mardal shatter their program record in the hammer with a 76.18m (249-11) effort at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational. Mardal is also the national leader in that event.
Texas A&M is up to No. 5 after several strong performances at the Michael Johnson Invitational (You’ll want to read the NCAA DI Women’s Outdoor Track & Field National Rating Index to hear about a record-breaking effort by the women’s program). Brandon Miller continued to shine in his freshman year, notching the sixth-fastest seasonal mark in the 800 at 1:47.33.
Here are the rest of the top-10 teams in Week 4: No. 6 Oregon, No. 7 Texas, No. 8 Alabama, No. 9 Florida State and No. 10 Kentucky. The Seminoles charged 20 spots since Week 3 thanks to the efforts of Jo’Vaughn Martin and Trey Cunningham. Martin took over the national lead in the 100 at 9.94, while Cunningham is now ranked No. 2 in the 110H at 13.28.
The 2021 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held from June 9-12 at the newly redesigned Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
