Last Chance Weekend truly shook up the national landscape as none of the top-10 teams held their spots since Week 6. Loras leapfrogged Washington (Mo.) into the No. 1 spot ahead of the NCAA Championships, while Johns Hopkins and Mount Union both soared more than three spots into the top-5. Former No. 3 MIT fell two spots to No. 5 prior to NCAAs.
Loras has never sat No. 1 in the Pre-Championships Edition before this year. The Duhawks, who are seeking their second national title in the past three years, have national leaders in four different events – all in the field: Grace Alley in both the high jump and pentathlon; Emma Seipel in the long jump; and Caitlyn Cox in the weight throw. Loras could get a major boost from its long jumpers as Seipel is one of three athletes billed among the top-5 athletes in the event.
Washington (Mo.) had been No. 1 all season long until this moment. The Bears, who last won a national title in 2017, tied with UW-La Crosse for a gender-high 15 entries. Emma Kelley is the lone national leader for the Bears in the 800 meters, but they’re well-positioned in both the pole vault and the triple jump with Yasmin Ruff (third) and Ebunoluwa Opata (third), respectively.
Johns Hopkins and Mount Union are ready to prove that it is quality over quantity. Both the Blue Jays and the Purple Raiders have less than ten entries, yet sit in prime position to make the podium this weekend. Johns Hopkins can never be counted out with star jumper Victoria Kadiri, who is the national leader in the triple jump and ranked third in the long jump. Mount Union is hoping to see big points from Kenadee Wayt, who could compete in four different finals.
MIT is right there at No. 5 with 11 entries. Alexis Boykin is the featured athlete for the Engineers, ranking first in the shot put and sitting second in the weight throw. Lexi Fernandez is also a top-5 athlete for MIT, seeded fifth in the mile.
Here are the rest of the top-10 teams in the Pre-Championships Edition: No. 6 UW-La Crosse, No. 7 UChicago, No. 8 Wartburg, No. 9 Rochester (N.Y.) and No. 10 Central (Iowa).
Get ready for the 2024 NCAA DIII Indoor Track & Field Championships, which take place THIS WEEKEND at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
