A single point. That was the margin separating No. 2 Grand Valley State and No. 4 Adams State at the Live in Lou Cross Country Classic, and the reason for turmoil at the top. Though the Grizzlies posted consecutive low sticks, it was the Lakers pivotal spread that got the job done. Five runners, guided by Andrew Hylen, stopped the clock in a span of ten seconds to go 14-15-23-25-27. Every. Place. Counts. The two historic squads will suit up for a second showdown in just over a month’s time at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships.
Benefitting from a similar situation was No. 9 Azusa Pacific who placed eighth at the Live in Lou Cross Country Classic. The Cougars tested themselves for just the second time all season and struck the jackpot as Juan Diego Castro led a group of five men in the top one hundred to upset No. 12 Lee (Tenn.). No. 3 Western Colorado opted for a much smaller event, choosing to travel to Grand Junction, Colorado, where Colorado Mesa and Fort Lewis lay waiting. The Mountaineers nearly swept the field, justifying their new position.
No. 6 West Texas A&M, No. 13 East Central (Okla.), No. 17 CAL Poly Pomona, No. 18 Walsh, No. 20 UC-Colorado Springs, No. 22 Lewis, No. 23 Augusta (S.D.), and No. 26 New Mexico Highlands also improved their billing in Week 1.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 18, as the 2023 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships will take place at the Tom Rutledge Cross Country Course in Joplin, Missouri!
