Cross Country Polls & Rankings
Wingate is back at No. 1, just a few weeks after it was bounced from the top spot. The Bulldogs won yet another team title at the SAC Championships, this time by a single point over No. 22 Anderson (S.C.). Wingate did rest its A-squad in advance of its tough upcoming slate between the Southeast Region Championships and the NCAA Championships.
When it comes to the RMAC Championships, rankings only get you so far. Colo. School of Mines found out the hard way, falling to Adams State 32-41 on Saturday. The Grizzlies shot out of the starting box, keen on catching the Orediggers flatfooted. Their strategy worked, putting three guys in the top-5 through the 2k split. From there on out, the message was simple: hang on. That they did, finishing out the day 2-4-5-8-13 to land on the top of the podium and move to No. 2 nationally. Paul Knight did all he could to counteract the offensive, capturing the individual title. His teammate, Jeremiah Vaille, rounded out the race’s top-3, but cross country is a team sport and Colo. School of Mines couldn’t muster the rest, thus dropping to No. 3.
Western Colorado finished a strong third at the RMAC Championships and improved two spots from No. 10 to No. 8. The Mountaineers put two of their own in the top ten and were 64 points clear of No. 15 UC-Colorado Springs in fourth.
Further east, the MIAA Championships shook up the polls. While No. 7 Northwest Missouri escaped with a win, No. 10 Pittsburg State made it an entertaining morning and was rewarded with a four spot improvement. The Bearcats got off to a fantastic start, Aziz Mohammed and Drew Atkins crossing the line 1-2. Then the worry started to set in as The Gorillas accounted for 4-6-9-12. Thankfully for the former, the rest of their top-5 closed the door shortly thereafter.
Just out of the mix, Washburn jumped three spots to No. 14. For the first time all season The Ichabods competed against their Central Region opponents at the MIAA Championships. Besides Donald Kibet, who finished third overall, they ran as a pack, boasting a seven second spread between their 2-5. It helped them to 77 points, just 12 back of Pittsburg State.
Other big risers included No. 19 East Central (Okla.) and No. 21 Walsh, who saw four and five positions gained. The Tigers remain the gold standard in the Great American Conference, capturing the title for a fourth straight year, marking 11 in the last 15 tries. The Cavaliers showed out at the GMAC Championships, seeing their top-4 stack up 5-7-8-9 to take home the trophy.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 22, because that’s when the 2025 NCAA DII Cross Country Championships will be held at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
