Grand Valley State rose to second nationally after a brilliant performance at the Joe Piane Invitational. The Lakers finished fourth with a score of 161 points, an outstanding average time of 16:53, and a tight gap of 39 seconds. Last year’s individual NCAA DII Cross Country Champion Lauren Kiley was supported by strong races from Allie Arnsman and Abigail VanderKooi to help the Lakers defeat many Division I teams.
West Texas A&M dropped to third in the rankings after a third place finish at the Swags Louisville Cross Country Classic Gold race with an average time of 17:21, and 42 second spread between its runners. The Buffaloes placed three of their runners in the top 20, led by M-F Athletic National Athlete of the Week Sarah Koomson. Cedarville moved up to fifth after placing fifth in the race race, only 66 points behind the Buffaloes with an average time of 17:35.
No. 6 Wingate, which competed at the Paul Short Run last week, fell one spot to No. 6, where the Yellow Jackets used to be. The Bulldogs were 16th overall with a close pack (a nine second gap between their second and fifth runners), and displayed progress with their seventh runner running the same time as their third scorer last year at the same meet.
Nebraska-Kearney rose two places to 18th after a seventh place finish at the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival scoring 258 points with the return of Ella Buhlke adding a key low stick.
No. 19 Catawba saw the biggest upward leap (five positions) in the rankings this week. The Indians placed seventh at the Swags Louisville Cross Country Classic with a strong front running from Hannah Caudill and Madison Clay.
Nine different ranked teams will compete this weekend at the Lewis Crossover in Romeoville, Illinois: No. 9 Lewis, No. 10 Walsh, No. 11 Fort Lewis, No. 14 Pittsburg State, No. 15 Chico State, No. 20 Tampa, No. 28 Colorado Mesa, No. 29 Palm Beach Atlantic, and No. 30 Colorado Christian.
