Texas cemented its spot atop the rankings and even extended its lead. The top-ranked Longhorns starred at the Texas A&M vs Texas Dual, adding or improving four marks that fall within the top-10 performers on the NCAA DI Descending Order List. Jonathan Jones and Willington Wright had a major say against the rival Aggies: Jones took over the national lead in the 400 meters at 45.07 and toted the baton third on the now-fourth-ranked 4×400 relay; Wright clocked the third-fastest 400m effort at 45.64 and anchored that same 4×400 relay.
Texas A&M jumped into the passenger seat next to the Longhorns. The second-ranked Aggies contributed four new or improved national top-10 marks to their ledger, led by two from Devon Achane. The sophomore sprinter is now the co-national leader in the 200 at 20.20 and ranked fifth in the 100 with a wind-aided 10.12. Texas A&M also has the fifth-ranked 4×100 relay, which included Achane on the second leg.
Florida climbed eight spots from No. 11 to No. 3 in Week 2. The Gators added three new national top-10 marks to their resume, including two in the 200: Jacory Patterson is now the co-national leader at 20.22; reigning NCAA Outdoor champion Joseph Fahnbulleh won a star-studded heat this past weekend and is now ranked fourth nationally at 20.22. Sam Austin cracked the top-10 of the 800 with his 1:48.15 effort on his home track.
Texas Tech moved up one spot to No. 4. The Red Raiders only added one national top-10 mark to their haul in the guise of Gabriel Oladipo, who is now ranked tenth in the discus at 58.94m (193-5). Courtney Lindsey (200) and Chris Welch (triple jump) are still national leaders in their respective events following their sterling efforts two weeks ago.
Baylor dropped three spots from No. 2 to No. 5. The Bears saw their 4×400 relay improve its seasonal-best mark to 3:02.42. Nathaniel Ezekiel ran the third leg of that relay and still holds the top spot nationally in the 400-meter hurdles at 49.14. Johnny Brackins (long jump) and Chincecherem Prosper Nnamdi (javelin) also lead the nation in their respective events.
Here are the rest of the top-10 teams in Week 2: No. 6 Kentucky (up four spots), No. 7 Stanford (up 139 spots!), No. 8 Princeton (down two spots), No. 9 LSU (down one spot) and No. 10 Southern California (down six spots). That massive jump by the Cardinal was buoyed by the efforts of their distance runners at the Stanford Invitational this past weekend.
Mark your calendars for June 8-11, because that’s when the 2022 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon!
