All TFRI Reports
It’s a virtual tie at the top of the chart, as the National TFRI expects a two-team race for the team title between top-ranked Georgia and second-ranked Texas. Several other teams could make a run (jump and throw) at the top prize, but the formula suggests that either the Bulldogs or the Longhorns could capture their second or first outdoor national team title in program history.
Georgia brings 11 entries with it to Eugene, Oregon, seven of which are ranked among the top-5 seasonal performers. The Bulldogs have their athletes spread across nine events from the 100 meters to the decathlon – and everywhere in between. Georgia has two national leaders in Kyle Garland (decathlon) – who is also the collegiate record-holder – and Darius Carbin (high jump). Matthew Boling will be looked upon to score big points for the Bulldogs in both the 100 meters and 200 meters, where he is ranked in the top-5 in both. Don’t forget about Elija Godwin in the 400 meters or former NCAA champion Johannes Erm in the decathlon, either.
Texas has 15 entries to the NCAA Championships with nine ranked among the top-10 seasonal performers. The Longhorns have two top-ranked athletes in Micaiah Harris (200 meters) and Tripp Piperi (shot put). Jonathan Jones is ranked second in the 400 meters and a member of the third-ranked 4×400 relay. Texas has six entries ranked outside the top-10 that could contribute valuable points to its team total as it looks to pair its indoor crown with the outdoor variety.
Florida State jumped eight spots from No. 11 to No. 3 after sending 12 entries through to the final site. Trey Cunningham has continued to blister the track, lowering his PR in the 110-meter hurdles to 13.07 this past weekend, which came into a 1.5 m/s headwind. Adriaan Wildschutt is also ranked No. 1 nationally in the 10,000 meters and could add points in the 5000 meters. Potential for big points could also come from the jumps, where Florida State has four entries.
BYU is back in the top-5 after seeing 13 entries make their way to Hayward Field. After years of packing the distance events, only five of the Cougars’ participants are of that ilk. Otherwise, BYU will see two athletes look for big points in the pole vault – Zach McWhorter and Caleb Witsken – and could get additional top-8 efforts in both the decathlon and 400 meters, among others.
Defending champion LSU held steady at No. 5 in the final National TFRI. The Tigers hauled in 11 entries with six ranked among the seasonal top-10 performers. Out of those six in the top-10, five are in the top-5: Eric Edwards Jr. in the 110H; John Meyer in the shot put; Dorian Camel in the 200; Sean Dixon-Bodie in the triple jump; and last year’s unsung hero Tzuriel Pedigo in the javelin (Pedigo won the NCAA title last year, which propelled LSU to its major achievement).
Here are the rest of the top-10 teams in Week 10: No. 6 Florida, No. 7 Texas Tech, No. 8 North Carolina A&T, No. 9 Stanford and No. 10 Alabama. Out of those programs, the Aggies and the Cardinal made the biggest moves, climbing six spots and ten spots, respectively, since Week 9.
You should have already marked your calendars for June 8-11, as that’s when the 2022 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships are going to be held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
