The west isn’t that wild any longer, but it’s sure leading the way with rivals Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps sitting No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Both the Sagehens and Stags own 13 national top-10 marks on the Descending Order List and do so in different ways: Pomona-Pitzer has a Sagehens’ share of them in the steeplechase and the 5000 meters, the latter of which three athletes are in the top-5 and six in the top-10; CMS spread its marks across nine different event areas, spanning from the 100m to the javelin throw and everywhere in between.
Rowan isn’t too far off pace in third. The Profs captured 14 national top-10 marks so far this season with four of them coming in the javelin alone: Greg Poloso is the national leader at 67.89m (222-9); Dan McAleavey is ranked second at 67.11m (220-2); Lane Owens is ranked sixth at 60.42m (198-3); and Edgar Rosa is ranked eighth at 59.10m (193-11).
Carnegie Mellon is ranked fourth in Week 1. While the Tartans only have six national top-10 marks to their credit in the early goings, two of those are national-leading efforts by one athlete – Bram Miller. The standout thrower leads the nation in both the shot put (17.67m/57-11¾) and discus (51.38m/168-7). Elsewhere, CMU’s 4×400 relay is ranked second nationally at 3:17.50.
Hardin-Simmons rounds out the top-5 teams at No. 5. The Cowboys own six national top-10 marks with four of them residing in the top-5. Isaiah Poston is the national leader in the high jump with a clearance of 2.05m (6-8¾). Teammate Garrett Rothans is also ranked in the top-10 nationally in the event with his best bar of 1.96m (6-5).
Here are the rest of the top-10 teams in Week 1: No. 6 George Fox, No. 7 East Texas Baptist, No. 8 McMurry, No. 9 Linfield and No. 10 MIT.
Mark your calendars for May 26-28, because that’s when the 2022 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio!
