2022 NCAA DI Women’s Cross Country National Coaches’ Poll – Week 3

NEW ORLEANS – The first major weekend of competition this season did not disappoint.

Here is the newest edition of the NCAA Division I Women’s Cross Country National Coaches’ Poll for the 2022 season, as released on Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Remember that this poll is conducted by counting votes from 11 member coaches – one from each of the division’s nine regions (who also do the regional rankings) – as well as two members from the NCAA Cross Country Executive Committee.

The #RunToStillwater is gaining momentum.

Cross Country Polls & Rankings

While the remainder of the National Coaches’ Poll had major changes, one thing stayed constant. NC State received all 11 possible first-place votes to maintain its grasp as the top squad in the nation. The Wolfpack, who opened up the season with a win at the adidas XC Challenge, will travel to South Bend, Indiana this Friday for the Joe Piane Invitational that will feature No. 3 New Mexico, No. 8 Notre Dame and No. 10 Alabama, among others in the top-30.

Oklahoma State continued to climb the National Coaches’ Poll and set another program-best billing, this time at No. 2, after storming to a win at the Cowboy Jamboree this past weekend that featured six national top-10 teams. The Cowgirls scored 69 points and placed four athletes in the top-15. The duo of Natalie Cook and Taylor Roe gave OSU a 1-2 punch, as Cook broke the tape in 20:17.1 to be the ultimate low stick for the Cowgirls.

Northern Arizona soared 18 spots from No. 22 to No. 4 for their highest ranking in program history. The Lumberjacks placed second to Oklahoma State in a stacked field and topped third-place BYU, fourth-place Colorado and fifth-place Stanford. Elise Stearns and Annika Reiss finished fifth and sixth, respectively, for NAU, with the rest of their scoring five going 22-27-28 to give them 88 points.

BYU ascended two spots to No. 5 for their first top-5 appearance this year. The Cougars placed three athletes in the top-18 at the Cowboy Jamboree, led by Aubrey Frentheway’s fourth-place showing.

Stanford, Colorado and Washington all slid down the index. The Cardinal fell to No. 6, the Buffaloes are now No. 7 and the Huskies dropped to No. 9.

Several other programs throughout the remainder of the top-30 made big jumps: Utah went from No. 19 to No. 11; Syracuse moved from the Land of Receiving Votes to No. 14; Utah Valley climbed 11 spots to No. 16; California Baptist went from No. 29 to No. 21; Kentucky  jumped six spots to No. 23. The Wolverines, Lancers and Wildcats all set program bests with their rankings this week.

Mark your calendars for November 19, as that’s when the 2022 NCAA DI Cross Country Championships will be held at the OSU Cross Country Course in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Don’t forget that the championship races will be broadcast commercial-free once again on ESPNU.
