Cross Country Polls & Rankings
UW-La Crosse continues its dominance as it sweeps all ten of the first-place votes after an impressive start to their October campaign. The Eagles competed at Notre Dame’s Joe Piane Invitational against various Division I teams and finished sixth in the team standings. UW-La Crosse, led by Grant Matthai in 23:17.0, put three runners in the top 30. The Eagles also sent their second squad of runners to the Blugold Invitational in Colfax, Wisconsin, and finished third overall among some of the North region’s best teams.
Wartburg held its ground at second in the rankings after a team effort at its home meet, the Dan Huston Invitational. The Knights rolled to a convincing win and were led by Isaiah Hammerand as he was followed up by their other finishers in a commanding manner. Wartburg looks to test its might against the nation’s other finest teams as it travels to the Augustana Interregional Invitational in Rock Island, Illinois later this month.
Johns Hopkins rose to third in the rankings after an impressive display at the Paul Short Run. The Blue Jays, led by M-F Athlete of the Week Emmanuel Leblond, who holds this honor for the second time this season, competed against various established Division I teams and held their own. The Blue Jays finished 15th in the highly competitive Gold Race and beat SUNY Geneseo and RPI handedly. Following Leblond was his fellow teammates Anthony Clark, Connor Oiler, Cedar Nichols-Barnhart, and Caleb Tenney who all finished in the top half of the field.
NYU captured the fourth position in the rankings after being ranked 13th last week. This comes after an absolutely lethal performance at the Paul Short Run. NYU won the White Race with 54 total points and demolished the field by 47 total points with a 22-second total spread. The top five Violets were all within the top 20 finishers overall as the team finished with three in the top ten.
Pomona-Pitzer fell to fifth, yet it is still impressive to note that they stayed within the top five as they competed closely as a team at their home invitational. The Sagehens put six total finishers in the top 19 total in the race with a controlled pack mentality led by Jack Stein in 24:43. Along with Stein was a Sagehen trio of Amir Barkan, Peter Neid, and Jefferson Wright along with Nate Wehner rounding out the squad.
North Central (Ill.) holds sixth after competing in the Men’s 8k Gold at the Louisville Classic and finishing sixth behind five NCAA DI programs. SUNY Geneseo fell from third to seventh after being beaten by NYU at the Paul Short Run. Williams rose one spot to eighth and Tufts fell two spots into ninth after the Ephs got the better of the Jumbos by one point at the Keene State Invitational. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps fell to tenth and rounds out the top ten teams, but did not race its top men at Pomona-Pitzer’s home meet this past weekend.
Look out for the coming weeks, as teams are gearing up for other major meets, as well as the 2025 NCAA DIII Cross Country Championships on November 22 at the Roger Millikin Cross Country Course in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
