Wartburg is the clear favorite to capture its first national title in program history. The top-ranked Knights enter the NCAA Championships with 15 entries, of which 13 are billed among the top-10 performers this season. Just about every athlete Wartburg has going to North Carolina will be doubling, including national leader Dallas Wright in the 400 and 400H, as well as three of the Knights’ distance runners – Christopher Collet (steeple-5K), Joe Freiburger (5K-10K) and Matt Heinzman (1500-5K) – among others.
UW-Oshkosh sits second entering the NCAA Championships. The Titans are looking for their first national title since 2009. UW-Oshkosh owns 13 entries, of which seven are ranked among the top-5 performers this season. Jonathan Wilburn is the top-ranked athlete in the triple jump, while Jack Flynn sits No. 2 in the discus and the 4×100 relay holds down the No. 2 spot.
UW-Eau Claire, the 2019 champion, is ranked third. The Blugold hope to see several top-8 finishers in the decathlon, where they have four athletes entered – Marcus Weaver (No. 1), Jordan Lacey (No. 2), Abrahm Schroedl (No. 3) and Mitch Stegman (No. 7). Weaver is also entered in the javelin throw, where he is ranked No. 2 on the Descending Order List.
UW-La Crosse is ranked fourth, despite an overwhelming number of entries (16). The Eagles, who have won the most team titles in NCAA DIII history (15), have multiple athletes ready to compete in the 100, 200, 400 and pole vault. UW-La Crosse has single qualifiers in the 1500, 10K, 110H, high jump, long jump, triple jump and both relays.
Rowan is also expected to be in contention for a podium spot. The fifth-ranked Profs have 12 entries into the meet with Nana Agyemang headlining the group with his top-ranked mark in the long jump.
Here are the rest of the top-10 teams in Week 9: No. 6 John Carroll, No. 7 UW-Stout, No. 8 Carnegie Mellon, No. 9 Washington (Mo.) and No. 10 Loras. The eighth-ranked Tartans benefited the most from Last Chance Week, as they put up four marks that rank among the top-5 performers in their respective events (400H, long jump, triple jump and shot put).
